Accessibility
MCe is designed for accessibility as much as we have been able to.
Different devices, different benefits
Working on a wide variety of devices to make it as easy as possible. If you need really large text – go with a tablet or laptop. If you like a tiny cellphone and your eyesight is good enough or you wear your reading glasses religiously, or you just want something that fits in your pocket, go with a cell phone. If you have large fingers, go with an iPad, if you have small fingers – the iPad mini was designed for you.
No multi-finger gestures required
All internal actions can be done with one or two fingers, no multi finger gestures required. If this is something you need – remember to also check the settings on your device to make the operating system level commands and keyboards also do this.
If your device supports multi-finger gestures, look at its documentation to see how to get the best value out of multi-finger gestures.
Color (Color deficiency/blindness)
While we use color as indicators, color is never the sole indicator for any important information, so if you are one of the 1 in 9 males that has a form of color deficiency (often called color blindness), we try to ensure here is nothing hidden from you.
- This obviously does not mean that you will see everything that a person of so called normal color vision does. For example, we may have an icon that has red color vs another that has green color. For the person with red/green color weakness, we also provide a different shape. For the person who sees clearly red vs green, the color alone can make it easier for them to see the difference. So what we mean is we try very hard to have nothing hidden from you even if you have to work a tiny bit harder to see the distinction that others can see by just seeing the color difference.
Vestibulara Disorders
For those with Vestibular Disorders (visually induced motion sickness affecting 1 in 20) we have settings to keep motion to an absolute minimum. Again, set the operating system levels to do this. Some devices, such as Win8 give an ability to turn motions off. Other devices, like Apple iOS9 give you the ability to set the motions lower but don't currently give you the ability to turn them off.)
Languages other than English
Language, MCe is designed from the ground up to work with multiple languages and more and more features will be addressed. This combined with the ability to change most images, means you don't have to have a US centric UI. Talk to us if you want access to this functionality.
Note: If you need to use a language with Unicode characters, you cannot use an iOS device. Apple has known about flaws (memory leaks) in iOS/Safari for years and has chosen instead to focus on sales to English, Spanish and French.
Size of things – nearsighted, 'fat fingers'
Screen font etc.., size. Some of us should use reading glasses, but we try not to. Others have great eyesight and screens that they want to fit as much on as possible. We have optimized for touch vs mouse and for weak eyesight vs great eyesight. We provide on the configuration menu, accessibility, the option to change the size of most things up or down. The screen gives more details as well as the current recommendations. While Apple designed the iPad mini to be used by people with better than average eyesight and smaller than average fingers, we provide a feature (started with 8.2) that lets you change the size of everything. The result is you can make the buttons and other elements the same physical size on an iPad mini as on a regular iPad – of course this means there will be less 'on' the screen since the screen is about 20% smaller.
Futures
Going forward, we are going to continue to consider accessibility issues, some will be best solved with choosing the right hardware/operating system; others will be best solved by us adopting our software to meet the needs. Let us know any issues you or any of your staff have so we can look into what we can do. We are determined to remain the best in class application in this as well as many other areas.
