Better in the app
What does that mean?

Better in the device apps: (The iOS and iPadOS app store, the Android play store app)

  • picture taker
  • barcode scanner is far better - not just a little bit, especially for those using it a lot.
  • it remembers who you are so the device security logs you in
  • improved file picker

Better in the "Desktop App for MC" and "MCe Desktop App"

AKA "Desktop App for Maintenance Connection" and "Maintenance Connection Everywhere Desktop App"

Did you know there's also a pair of Desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux, one for MC, one for MCe - technically a total of 6 products, and they have many advantages over running in a generic browser like Chrome, Edge or Brave? See Desktop app

Not as good in the device app: (Better in the browser app)

  • This ONLY applies to the iOS and Android device apps, it does not apply to the Desktop apps: if your server is outdated, new versions of the app (auto update) won't work. But this is minor because if your server is outdated - only existing people would
  • This ONLY applies to the iOS and Android device apps, it does not apply to the Desktop apps: We don't have a method to transfer you from the web browser app to the device app.
    • So ... if you are using the 'phone' to scan a barcode to take you to the asset, the person (scanning badge), you end up
    • If you have a portal that has a URL to log in, you will end up in the browser, not in the device app
  • This ONLY applies to the iOS and Android device apps, it does not apply to the Desktop apps: Multiple tabs (especially running on a Mac where tabs are easier to get to, phone browsers are both hard to use tabs and hard to use once you have a tab given the size of the screen)
  • On Android, due to an 'on purpose' restriction by Google for 'not a photo app' application, the multi-image picker has been downgraded to 1 file at a time. If you want to upload bulk files, use Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS or iPadOS. OR ... use the web browser app version on Android.

We are not aware (yet?) of any reasons why a browser is better than our Desktop apps on Windows, Mac or Linux.

Older, no longer valid, reasons the browser app was not as good.

Prior to 2026 for a few years there was a serious iOS bug that we hadn't found a way to work-a-round that required you to regularly reboot the device once the bug started manifesting itself. Apple hasn't fixed their bug yet, probably they are having a hard time finding it, but we found a way in late 2025 to work around their bug. So now the browser app in Safari is still very good despite the device app being better.

Prior to version 3.1 the desktop apps where not generally available, they were custom products that were only useful in specific custom environments.
