Events and Actions Intro
E&A vs

TL;DR

Events and Actions are our general purpose "something specific happened ... therefore something needs to happen" toolbox.

There are specialized versions of these, existing and coming:

  • Automations. Automations are based on schedule (timing), meter and specification 'events' to do PMs, PdMs and so much more. See also PM, TBM, UBM, PdM CB ... You CAN do them through the generic E&A system, but most of the time (but not ALL of the time) it is easier using the specialized, optimized, Automations.
  • Report generation are based on schedule (timing) creation of reports

Details

Events and Actions (E&A) exist to take virtually anything that can happen:

  • Type of change in the database
  • Type of change in any OTHER database
  • APIs
  • Weather forecast values
  • Manual trigger (human that is)
  • File change
  • Scheduled 'every 17 minutes'
  • Error event in the EAM/CMMS

When possible, you will normally want the special purpose ones such as Automations for PMs, but what if the schedule you want is too complicated for what we offer? Well in that case it may be worth the time to write an Event and Action that mimics the PM, but lets you have as complex a set of rules as you want.

Sometimes, very rarely, you need to be worrying about things like "But every 4 years there is 1 more day in a 'year'" or if you are one of the places that still does the Standard time/Daylight time dance twice a year: "But what do I do when the time 'falls back' and that means there is an extra hour" in which case, you can program it in the E&A system.

But most of the time you'll just decide to ignore details like that - they don't usually matter for 'preventative' maintenance.

If you have a DataHub connector that you want to import every time a new file shows up (or a specific file is edited) - that's a great choice for an Event and Action.

If you want to delay certain types of work orders based on the weather forecast - that's a great choice for an Event and Action

You might have special assignment situations that are best handled by any of the other tooling we provide for assigning.
